History

The origins of our company lie in Amstenrade, where J. Schils started the business in 1925. At that time our activities mainly consisted of milling and mixing raw materials for local bakers and farmers.

The first successful experiments with milk replacers for calves were completed at the end of the 1950s. We soon started expanding rapidly through exports and by setting up branches in Italy, Belgium and Germany. We entered the calf wholesale business in 1970 and were soon expanding our own fattening farms.

A major milestone in our history was the opening of our fully automated new factory in Sittard in 1980, where our head office is located too. Besides this factory we also have branches in Italy, Germany, France and Belgium.

The VanDrie Group and Schils came to an agreement about a takeover in May 2004. The takeover was finalized by the end of December 2004. This takeover makes Schils stronger in our position as producer of milk replacers for rearing, exported worldwide.

Rearing young animals

Healthy animal rearing in the first months of life has a considerable impact on growth, weaning age and ultimate production.

The ultimate goal for rearing calves, lambs and kids, is to achieve and maintain a highly productive dairy herd. A good health status is vital to achieving that goal.  The supply of milk replacer to rearing animals is a precise job. These young animals will form the basis of future dairy herd and deserve attention to develop to strong and healthy heifers and dairy cows, sheep and goats.

The goal of a good milk replacer for piglets is to assure an optimal sow-milk replacement whenever the farmer is left with orphan piglets, the sow can not produce enough milk for feeding. Additionally, a well considerable impact on growth, weaning age and ultimate production will be achieved.

But there is also the immediate economics of the use of a good rearing milk replacer as the revenues of the cow, sheep and goat milk fed to the young calves, lambs and kids are missed.  When feeding milk replacers, farmers can sell the liquid milk directly to human food industry.  This higher revenue makes the use of milk replacer a lucrative business.

Production & Quality assurance

Technical ingenuity is applied at factory level to ensure efficiency and reliability. The awarded GMP+ and HACCP standards and ISO certification guarantee quality assurance in formulation/development, production process control, installation and servicing of feed products.

All ingredients used to produce calf milk are sampled and tested and, if approved, released for production, recorded and archived, ensuring continuous tracking and tracing from ingredient to final product by the implementation of SAP. By our own research and European testing we meet all European and international standards.

The extensive knowledge within Schils concerning raw materials is applied to ensure the highest possible standards in the fully automated production process. Schils laboratories are fully certified by the Veterinary Services of the Netherlands, as producers of milk replacers and livestock feed for national and export use.

Innovation

Since 2007, new considerable financial resources have been invested to create a dynamic research and development department and sophisticated production facilities.

Schils laboratories are responsible for technical development and innovation, often in close cooperation with other companies within the VanDrie Group.

An automatic plant is operated from supply and storage of raw materials to storage of finished products. This automation has reduced cost whilst maintaining high and stable product quality. Schils B.V. manufactures a range of milk replacers for all kind of young animals.
Schils' Milk replacers for calves are constantly monitored and tested in Schils' own testing farms in Belgium, France, Germany and Holland. Over 25.000 calves are owned by Schils and used for testing Schils' own milk replacers.
All type of products are being produced:

• Milk replacers with skimmed milk powder

• Milk replacers without skimmed milk powder but based on high quality milk products

• Acidified milk replacers with 100% milk protein for stock-feeding

Besides the complete milk feeding for calves, Schils also produces a complete range of milk replacers for piglet-feeding (main brand name: Pigiplus) and a complete range of dairy-based semi-finished products to be used for compound feed manufacturers all around the world. The products are based on combinations of milk protein, lactose and edible refined fats. These products are mainly known as skimmed milk powder replacers, sweet whey powder replacer with variations in fat-, lactose- and protein content. (main brand name: Protilac, Wheylac).

Schils produces as well 100% dairy-based spray-dried products in combination with all kind of liquid refined edible fats.
